Music theory courses are taken concurrently with piano lessons or functional keyboard for the Music Major, (Mus 1111, 1112, 2111, 2112) until the piano proficiency test is passed. The credit requirement for most students is 4 cr. However this is dependent on the piano skills students enter with. The requirement can be fulfilled through a group class, lessons, or by demonstration of proficiency through testing. The requirements differ between pianists, singers, and other instrumentalists.

Students planning to teach at the secondary level must meet licensure requirements of the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board, which change as new rules are adopted.
