Completion requirement

The Mathematics Discipline at UMN Morris offers a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) Department at UMN Twin Cities offers a Master of Science in Data Science in Operations Research. The integrated BA MATH/MS DSOR program offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree (BA in MATH) and a master’s degree (MS in DSOR) in five years. This IDP emphasizes education in mathematics and provides preparation for students wishing to pursue a career in industrial engineering.

This program offers several benefits: streamlined admission from the undergraduate program to the graduate program and flexibility in concurrently enrolling in undergraduate-level and graduate-level courses in their senior year (at least 8 graduate level credits can be transferred to the graduate program). Students in this IDP would be eligible for teaching and research assistants in the same manner as other MS in DSOR students. Note: The GRE is not required for admissions to the MS in DSOR

program. The BA MATH and MS DSOR degrees must be completed in their entirety, with no courses shared between them. The graduate degree cannot be earned before the undergraduate requirements are satisfied.

Application to the IDP is open to MATH undergraduates at Morris who:

1.  Have 90 credits completed or in progress

2.  Have the ability to complete at least 8 graduate level credits during their senior year in addition to their remaining bachelor’s degree requirements.

3.  Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 or a strong letter of recommendation from a MATH, STAT or CSCI faculty member.

4.  Have completed the following prerequisite courses by the end of the Spring semester of their Junior Year: MATH 3111 (Linear Algebra); MATH 2401W (Differential Equations); MATH 2101 (Multivariate Calculus); MATH 1101 (Calculus I) and Math 1102 (Calculus II). The student must achieve a minimum grade of B in each of these courses, or submit a strong letter of recommendation from a MATH, STAT or CSCI faculty member.

Full application instructions and the link to apply to MS DSOR are found here.

Undergraduate Degree Progress
The Math Faculty at UMN Morris for the BA Math/MS DSOR IDP program will advise all IDP students on degree planning during their undergraduate education. The MATH Discipline requires all undergraduates (including IDP students) to meet once per semester with an undergraduate advisor for course planning and review of degree requirements. During these advising sessions, the undergraduate advisor will review the student’s APAS and make any necessary adjustments.

IDP students are encouraged to meet with the ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator if they have questions about the MS in DSOR degree program or any other MS in ISyE specific questions.

IDP students must complete at least 8 graduate level credits during their senior year. These 8 graduate level credits or more may include any of the required graduate level courses in the MS DSOR program and are offered through UNITE, an educational unit within the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University of Minnesota through which students may enroll in CSE courses if they are unable to attend on-campus courses. At the 1st week of each semester, all IDP undergraduates must notify the undergraduate advisor regarding which courses they would like applied to the MS in DSOR degree.

The Mathematics Discipline at UMN Morris offers a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at UMN Twin Cities offers a Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering. The integrated BA MATH/MS ISyE (IE track) program offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree (BA in MATH) and a master’s degree (MS ISyE (IE track)) in five years. This IDP emphasizes education in mathematics and provides preparation for students wishing to pursue a career in industrial engineering. The IE track allows three plan options: M.S. Plan A (20 course credits and a thesis, plus 10 thesis credits); M.S. Plan B (30 course credits and a Plan B project); and M.S. Plan C (32 course credits).

Students admitted to the Integrated BA MATH/MS ISyE (IE track) program will complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within 4 years for New High School (NHS) and 3 years for New Advanced Standing (NAS) students, upon meeting the requirements for their undergraduate degree. Admission to the IDP will be revoked if the awarding of this bachelor’s degree exceeds 8 semesters for NHS students and 6 semesters for NAS students.

The BA bachelor’s degree must be awarded prior to the beginning of the MS in ISyE master’s career. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees cannot be awarded simultaneously.
